Have you ever visited a cemetery searching for a specific gravesite, only to realize that the gravestones were nearly illegible due to lichen growth or grime? The Benzie Area Historical Society has a project to train volunteers in the correct methods of cleaning cemetery gravestones. The training session lasts approximately one hour and will be led by BAHS Curator Jane Purkis.
The next sessions will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Champion Hill Cemetery and on Tuesday, August 11, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Inland Township Cemetery.
Each participant will need to bring a "cleaning kit" consisting of a bucket or jug for water, a stiff natural brush, a stiff sponge, an old toothbrush, a trowel, a trash bag, and a plastic or wood ?scraper.? No metal objects may be used to clean the gravestones.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn the proper methods for caring for your loved one?s gravestone or for the veterans? gravestones in your local cemetery.
Due to COVID-19, participants are required to wear masks, abide by social distancing, and bring their own cleaning kits.
