Description
Join area landowners for a Forestry Field Day on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Malik Certified Tree Farm, 2 miles southeast of Karlin. Due to Covid-19 state restrictions regarding crowd limits, the following safety mandates will be in effect: - Field Day limited to the first 40 landowners registered - Everyone must wear a mask - Everyone must maintain a 6 foot distance from others outside their family unit Consulting Forester, Steve Kalisz, has helped to guide the landowner in the management of this property, starting with the preparation of written management plans for the forested acres. Steve, and other local foresters and natural resource professionals, will lead short hikes to northern hardwoods, pine, aspen and open fallow field sites to share how multiple use management works on the ground, including: sustainable forest management practices, insect and disease control, how high deer populations impact forests, and planting to increase diversity, pollinator and wildlife habitat, and reforestation. Their years of forest management experience will provide valuable information and will aid landowners in weighing different factors to consider when making management decisions on their forested property. The Forestry Field Day is co-sponsored by the Michigan Tree Farm Committee, the Forestry Assistance Program of the Benzie, Leelanau and Grand Traverse Conservation Districts, the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program and the Natural Resource Conservation Service. Information about the American Tree Farm Program, free on-site technical assistance available to area landowners, how you can save on forestland property taxes through two state funded programs, the MAEAP Forest, Wetland & Habitat Verification Program, and the technical assistance and cost-share opportunities through NRCS--will all be discussed! Please register by September 7th through a link at https://natureiscalling.org/event/forests-for-the-future/. Cost for the workshop is $5.00/person and includes a local foods box lunch and bottled beverages.
