Description
The community is coming together to honor Charles W. Beeman, a Civil War veteran who passed away more than 80 years ago.
Beeman served in Company K, 185th Ohio Infantry.
He passed away on December 23, 1939, in Empire. He is buried in Almira Township at the Greenbriar Cemetery in Lake Ann.
For the last eight decades, Beeman’s gravesite did not have a headstone.
The community, along with other organizations such as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Robert Finch Camp No. 14, came together to get Beeman a traditional Civil War headstone.
The headstone was provided at no cost, through Veterans Affairs.
Now, where he is laid to rest sits a white marble headstone with a bronze plaque, complete with the America flag.
“Believe it or not, there are a lot of Civil War Veterans that do not have headstones and at this time, we want to make sure all of the mare honored and all of them receive their rightful headstones and the honoring they deserve,” said David Smith, past department commander, Robert Finch Camp No. 14.
A headstone dedication ceremony will take place on July 10 at the Greenbriar Cemetery.
Also, at the ceremony, Beeman will be recognized as the last Union Veteran to be buried in Benzie County.
The event will begin around 11 a.m.
